WATER FESTIVAL TRIP FOR GRADE 5'S

Dear  Chaperones,
First of all, thank you so much for offering to assist us with our field trip!  These events don’t happen without parental involvement.

We have booked  1 bus with Switzer-Carty, we should have room for parents on the bus, but you may decide to take your own vehicle (wish I could). The bus will  arrive between 9:00-9:15am for departure on Thursday May 28 to get us out to Heritage Village (on the Arner Townline) in Kingsville at the Water Festival site about 9:45-10am. We would like to have parents here around 8:45 for a brief meeting in the gym  with the students to go over expectations and hand out maps for the activities.

To accommodate some changes in school bell times, they will be closing the festival at 1:15pm so the buses depart from Heritage Village at about 1:30pm in order to get us back to school by about 2:00-2:15pm.

We are very fortunate this year that Domino's Pizza is sponsoring lunch for all the students, teachers and parent chaperones who attend the festival this year.  Please still encourage the children to bring along snacks and something to drink. We will have a drinking water station on site so a refillable water bottle would be a good option especially if it’s a hot day! THIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT. Please remember that if it rains the days leading up to the event. Please see the original permission form for a list of recommended items that each child should bring.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mr. Francia
Mrs. Cosman

TRY THIS AT HOME !!

tree diagramsMr. Rankin is trying to figure out all the possible combinations for the grade 5/6 co-ed 4x100 metre relay team. He has Salina, Kennedy, Zach and Andrew to choose from. He needs our help!! Can you figure out how many possible combinations there are for the relay? Make sure to show all your work. Hint: if you're stumped look at the video I posted a few days ago on how to make a tree diagram.

COMPLETE THIS SAMPLE PROBLEM AT HOME TONIGHT AND BRING IT IN ON FRIDAY FOR A SPECIAL TREAT!!

PROBABILITY TEST

We are going to be wrapping up the final few days of practice before our unit test on Tuesday May 26. Today we will be playing some probability games to reinforce the probability concepts we have been learning.

KEY CONCEPTS FOR THE TEST TUESDAY

GRADE 5

  • BE FAMILIAR WITH AND BE ABLE TO USE THESE TERMS APPROPRIATELY: LIKELY, UNLIKELY,POSSIBLE, IMPOSSIBLE AND CERTAIN
  • BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE PROBABILITY OF EVENTS IN SPINNER GAMES, DICE GAMES AND GAMES OF CHANCE
  • UNDERSTAND THAT WE CAN APPLY FRACTIONS TO PROBABILITIES FOR EXAMPLE; YOU HAVE A 1/8 CHANCE OF PULLING OUT A COLOURED MARBLE FROM A SACK
  • BE ABLE EXPLAIN WHY A CERTAIN GAME IS FAIR FOR BOTH PLAYERS AND HOW TO FIX THE RULES OF THE GAME TO MAKE IT FAIR.
  • BE ABLE TO COMPLETE A TREE DIAGRAM FOR A GIVEN WORD PROBLEM
GRADE 6

  • BE FAMILIAR WITH AND BE ABLE TO USE THESE TERMS APPROPRIATELY: LIKELY, UNLIKELY,POSSIBLE, IMPOSSIBLE AND CERTAIN
  • BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE THE PROBABILITY OF EVENTS IN SPINNER GAMES, DICE GAMES , GAMES OF CHANCE AND BY LOOKING AT A GRAPH
  • UNDERSTAND THAT WE CAN APPLY FRACTIONS,DECIMALS AND PERCENTS TO PROBABILITIES FOR EXAMPLE; YOU HAVE A 1/8 CHANCE OF PULLING OUT A COLOURED MARBLE FROM A SACK
  • BE ABLE EXPLAIN WHY A CERTAIN GAME IS FAIR FOR BOTH PLAYERS AND HOW TO FIX THE RULES OF THE GAME TO MAKE IT FAIR.
  • BE ABLE TO COMPLETE A TREE DIAGRAM FOR A GIVEN WORD PROBLEM

    TREE DIAGRAMS

HOW CAN WE MAKE SENSE OF QUESTIONS THAT REQUIRE US TO FIND ALL POSSIBLE OUTCOMES OF EVENTS?

We can use a tree diagram to organize our work create a list of possible outcomes. Let me give you an example:

Johnny has to decide on an outfit to wear to the first day of school. He can choose between black and brown shorts. He has three different shirts to wear, blue, green and stripped. His last piece is his socks, should he go with black or white? Well how do we keep all this information organized and find all the possible outcomes? CHECK OUT THE VIDEO BELOW!!

    Probability Problems!!

The students are playing a dice game to introduce our probability unit. How likely is it that an event will occur ? What is the theoretical probability involved in coin flips, card games or sports? These are concepts we will be exploring over the next few weeks.

    WOW Assembly

Congratulations to Frankie, Andrew and Owen for being selected for our class. The theme was hard work and perseverance. These three  individuals showed great resilience and academic persistance. The second picture is our very own Steven M. Playing with the drumming bucket brigade.

    Little controlled Chaos!

Students are wrapping up their Cooperative games. Groups were to develop a cooperative game that is safe and engaging. During the next few weeks they will introduce their game and the class will try it out.

What a great start to our day!!

Desiree (sorry, dez) Sargeant was here to share her enthusiastic story telling gift !! We learned about Boogery Beatrice, Foolish Melinda nd some other amazing characters!

    MATH TEST FRIDAY MAY 8TH

We are going to be wrapping our unit on perimetre and area on Friday. The students have learned how to use formulas to determine the perimetre and area of various shapes. We have also been converting between metric units, for example converting metres to centimetres and square metres to other units squared.

    FOCUS FOR GRADE 5'S

    • convert from one metric unit to another
    • find the area and perimetre of rectangles, squares
    • find the area and perimetre of non-standard shapes (hexagons, triangles etc)
    • find perimetre using grid paper and also with a ruler
    • several word problems involving finding area and perimetre (find examples in their show what you know section, as well in their textbook.
    FOCUS FOR GRADE 6'S

    •  convert from one metric unit to another
    • convert from one metric unit to another metric unit when the metric units are squared (as in describing area of a shape)
    • find area of triangles, parralellograms and rectangles --should know the formulas for each of those shapes
    • find perimetre using grid paper and also with a ruler
    • several word problems involving finding area and perimetre

    EDUCATION THEN AND NOW!!

Come One Come all to St.Gabriel's Education Then and Now event!! A letter similar to the one below went home a few weeks ago. Please call if you have any questions or concerns.
