Curriculum Expectations for Multiplication and Division

We have been working on strategies for multiplication for the last two weeks. The students have learned how to use GROUPS and ARRAYS to solve multiplication problems. Today we will begin to introduce ideas around Division. We will also be using ideas related around GROUPS, ARRAYS and SHARING. Multiplication and Division are foundational concepts that students need to master. I strongly encourage continued practice of theses concepts at home on a regular basis. I am including the curriculum expectations for Multiplication and Division to give you an idea of where your child should be when it comes to these skills.

By The End of Grade 3
  • Relate multiplication of one-digit numbers and division by one-digit divisors to real-life situations, using a variety of tools and strategies
  • Multiply to 7x7 and divide to 49/7, using a variety of mental strategies
By The End of Grade 4

  • Multiply to 9x9 and divide to 81 ÷ 9, using a variety of mental strategies
  •  Solve problems involving the multiplication of one-digit whole numbers, using a variety of mental strategies
  •  Multiply whole numbers by 10, 100, and 1000, and divide whole numbers by 10 and 100, using mental strategies
  •  Multiply two-digit whole numbers by one-digit whole numbers, using a variety of tools, student-generated algorithms, and standard algorithms  (vertical multiplication)
  •  Divide two-digit whole numbers by one-digit whole numbers, using a variety of tools and student-generated algorithms
