Multiplication is a MUST!

Before the start of each math class we usually complete 10 minutes of mental math. We explore strategies to quickly manipulate numbers in our head to add and subtract. This builds math fluency and automaticity, which are both key skills. We are starting a unit on multiplication today and I can't stress enough how important it is that students practice their multiplication skills daily. Do it together, buy some flash cards at the dollar store, get  deck of cards and play multiplication war--the key is that they practice daily. I am including a few videos below for the students to watch!

Our Nutrition Field Trip

We had a great time at Zehrs' Food Market last week. We learned a lot about healthy eating and how to prepare nutritious and tasty food. Check out some of the pictures of our class learning from the nutrionist and then cooking up some treats.

Time and Elapsed Time

I am including a few videos that deal with teaching children how to tell time and then elapsed time. They can watch this as many times as they need to help them. I encourage you to help them practice at home as well. Give them quick little problems that they can solve at the dinner table.

New Year and New Challenges.

I hope that everyone had a restful and peaceful Christmas this year. We are now well into our school year and the pace of instruction is going to pick up a little. These first few days of 2017 will be spent going over expectations and routines. They've only been away for two weeks, but they need to be reminded of our class routines and policies. We are working on measurement in mathematics and I strongly encourage you to work with your child on telling time on an analog clock. In language we are wrapping up a unit on predictions and text features (titles, subtitles, fact boxes etc). We will continue to work on finding the main idea and supporting details of text. The first term report cards go home the first week of February. One last thing, we are going to Zehrs Wednesday the 11th to take part in our nutrition field trip. We are scheduled to leave at 9;30 and returning around 12.00 pm.
