Discovering the 'math'
Went to a workshop recently presented by Dan Meyer. He advocates stepping away from the text book and engaging students with open ended 'real life ' problems. Our board has also been promoting a more hands on and 'discovery' based math experience for our students. The junior teachers were just recently trained on this type of approach. Well we've been playing around with this and today I heard a comment that made me stop dead!! I presented a video (Dan Meyer type problem) and one of the kids said--'sir, where's the math?'. That did it for me!! They framed the problem, asked questions about missing information and moved toward a solution. I will be posting a link soon with some examples of the types if problems.
