FRACTION VIDEO LESSON

We are starting a new unit on Fractions. I would like the students to view the video and make some notes. Again, they can stop, rewind and go over the material as many times as they need to understand it. I am including a link to the video and another link to the notes page. I will need the students to print out the worksheet and complete it as they watch the video. They can use a plain piece of paper if there are issues with printing at home.

MATH TEST FRIDAY FEB 21

WE WILL BE FINISHING UP THIS UNIT BY MID-WEEK AND THEN DO SOME REVIEW BEFORE THE TEST ON FRIDAY FEB 21ST. THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW ISSUES RELATED TO ROUNDING OF DECIMALS AND DIVIDING OF DECIMALS, BUT FOR THE MOST PART WE HAVE PROGRESSED WELL THROUGH THIS UNIT. BELOW YOU WILL FIND A SUMMARY OF AREAS THAT STUDENTS NEED TO CONCENTRATE ON FOR THE TEST. PLEASE REMIND YOUR CHILD THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO USE MATHEMATICAL THINKING AND TERMINOLOGY WHEN COMPLETING THE WORK. IT IS ALSO CRITICAL THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO FULLY COMMUNICATE THEIR THINKING USING A COMBINATION OF WORDS, MATHEMATICAL OPERATIONS AND CONCRETE MATERIALS.

GRADE FIVE'S SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • WRITE A FRACTION OR MIXED NUMBER (1 3/100 =1.03) WHEN GIVEN THE DECIMAL
  • WRITE A DECIMAL FOR A FRACTION OR MIXED NUMBER (1 5/10 = 1.5)
  • COMPARE DECIMALS USING < > OR = SIGNS
  • ROUND DECIMALS TO A WHOLE NUMBER OR TO TENTHS
  • USING ESTIMATION STRATEGIES TO MENTALLY ADD DECIMALS (CHARTS ARE UP IN THE ROOM THAT HELP THEM REMEMBER THE STRATEGIES)
  • ADD AND SUBTRACT DECIMALS AND MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE DECIMALS BY 10, 100
  • THERE WILL ALSO BE SEVERAL WORD PROBLEMS THAT WILL NEED MANY OF THE STRATEGIES AND OPERATIONS LISTED ABOVE
GRADE SIX'S SHOULD BE ABLE TO:

  • WRITE A DECIMAL FOR A FRACTION OR MIXED NUMBER (1 5/1000 = 1.005)
  • COMPARE DECIMALS USING < > OR = SIGNS
  • ROUND DECIMALS TO A WHOLE NUMBER OR TO TENTHS, HUNDRETH
  • USING ESTIMATION STRATEGIES TO MENTALLY ADD DECIMALS (CHARTS ARE UP IN THE ROOM THAT HELP THEM REMEMBER THE STRATEGIES)
  • ADD AND SUBTRACT DECIMALS
  • MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE DECIMALS BY 10, 100,100 OR 0.01, 0.01,0.001 OR ANY WHOLE NUMBER
  • THERE WILL BE SOME PROBLEMS WITH MISSING DIGITS THAT THEY WILL NEED TO DECODE --FOR EXAMPLE
  • 7. ?2?
  • X    7
  • _____
  • ??.8?4
  • THERE WILL ALSO BE SEVERAL WORD PROBLEMS THAT WILL NEED MANY OF THE STRATEGIES AND OPERATIONS LISTED ABOVE

FRIENDS, ROMANS, COUNTRYMEN-LEND ME YOUR EYES!!

THE GRADE 5'S PERFORMED THEIR ROMAN SKITS TODAY!! WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. STUDENTS HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC, POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PRACTICES OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE. THROUGH THIS LEARNING AND ADDITIONAL RESEARCH, GROUPS DEVELOPED SHORT SCRIPTS THAT WOULD DEPICT SOME ASPECT OF DAILY  ROMAN LIFE IN THE EMPIRE.  CLICK ON THE VIDEOS BELOW TO WATCH.

      WE WANT STUDENT FEEDBACK

What a great experience last night!! There was a buzz and energy running through the entire school. We stress that students need to reflect on their learning in order to improve and continue to grow. With that in mind, we would appreciate students complete the Student Survey form below. It's a quick survey to see where we excelled and where we need to continue to grow.

      QUICK SURVEY

PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE TO COMPLETE OUR SURVEY.

      STUDENT LED CONFERENCES

There is a sense of anticipation and dread - all at the same time. We have been busy organizing our portfolios and making sure the kids are comfortable sharing their work. You will find several 'anchor charts' in the room to help guide students and parents through our celebration of learning. I will be 'floating' around if students are struggling with a particular piece of work. Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight. Oh, by the way, check out the door on the way into the room-a few students created a report card for me. I posted it on the door. I have a little work to do this term to bring up some of my marks!

      HOMEWORK BEFORE THE CLASS WORK

I have included a link to a learnzillion video that I would like both grades to view tonight.  This will give them some background information that they will need for the next math lesson. The students need to watch the video and make notes as they go along. The video can be stopped at any time and restarted as often as the student needs.
